THE PROPOSAL... ACCORDING TO THE BRIDE...

Date:  December 17, 2010

Place:  Phil’s Apartment, Los Angeles

It was a week from Christmas and we still didn’t have a tree for Phil’s place.  The night before, Phil told me that he wanted us to buy a tree together.

The next day, it rained! We were expecting the rain but hoped it wouldn’t be that bad.  After I got off work from an event in Downtown LA, I headed to Phil’s.  Since we were a week away from Christmas and it was raining, I was ready to tell him that getting a tree wasn’t so necessary anymore.  But, he beat me to it!

I walked in the door and Phil had already bought a tree.  He braved the elements to get it by himself! What a trooper! I was a little puzzled that he insisted on getting a tree.  If you know Phil, you’d know he’s not really up to working in the rain.

Despite this, he wanted to get the decorations out and trim the tree AFTER we head out to eat at our usual spot, Loteria Grill.  We had our weekly dinner there and went back home to start on the tree.

We strung the lights and put up the decor.  After all the decorations were up, Phil brought out two boxes of new ornaments he wanted me to open and display on the tree.  One for each of us.  The first was a martial arts ornament.  The second was a pink tiara.

Later, he brought out two more ornaments.  He told me it was the beginning of a new tradition; two frames with pictures from the past year.  I thought it was so sweet! That’s my baby for ya!

And lastly, he placed one bigger box out on the table and wanted me to open it.  I ripped  the wrapping paper and saw a Lennox glass ornament.  Mind you, when I worked at Gottschalks, I always thought Lennox ornaments were a bit more “traditional”.  The type you’d see at your grandma’s house! I saw the box.  It was an ornament with a Christmas tree made of glass, suspended in a glass sphere.  I was puzzled! I wondered why he would buy this ornament.  It wasn’t really his style -- or mine! So, I made fun of it for a bit and he kept insisting on opening it! I finally did...

And to my surprise, there was a black, velvet, silver-lined box sitting atop the ornament.  (I later found out he bought the ornament because the box was big enough to hide the ring box in it!) Being the sassy girl that I was, I didn’t want to get too excited because it could’ve just been an early Christmas gift, like a necklace or earrings.

But my heart skipped a beat when I opened it and my eyes fixated on a diamond, princess cut, solitaire ring.  It was beautiful -- and exactly what I always wanted and dreamed my ring would look like! I couldn’t even believe it was happening until I saw Phil on bended knee before me.

He popped the question and  I answered it with a big, enthusiastic YES! The exact words of his proposal actually escape me now.  I just remember the important words of “Will you marry me?” Everything else is a blur, to be honest!

So, after we kissed and hugged, it was all about telling our families and close friends.  And, of course, making it official on Facebook!
